June 2, 2020 – COVID-19 Update

The Board of Directors of Kansas Honor Flight regretfully announces that the 7 flights to Washington that were planned for the fall of 2020 have been postponed until 2021. With many of our aging veterans dealing with health related issues coupled with the uncertainty of the COVID-19 restrictions in place with airlines and the Washington, D.C. area, it is simply not prudent to have these fall flights. Attendees who were scheduled on one of the Fall flights will be contacted by one of our trip coordinators. The board of directors and flight leaders will be investigating travel opportunities for 2021 to put together plans to get the veterans there as soon as possible. We encourage everyone’s continued support of our mission as we deal with this unfortunate situation.

April 17, 2020 – Kansas Honor Flight update regarding COVID-19

We received notification yesterday from the Honor Flight Network that all Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. have been postponed through the end of June. Currently, Maryland’s stay home order is “indefinite” in duration and Virginia’s stay home order runs through at least June 10. Also, Arlington National Cemetery remains closed to the public and there is no date certain upon which ANC will reopen to the public and/or resume public viewing of the changing of the guard.  We are continuing to monitor the federal and DC area orders very closely and will keep you all updated.

We are in the process of contacting the attendees scheduled to travel in June to let them know we will be contacting them later regarding rescheduling their trip. While we are certainly hopeful that conditions will change to where it will be prudent to travel this fall, we simply are unsure.

March 19, 2020 – May Flights Postponed

With the growing concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus and in accordance with CDC guidelines, the Honor Flight Network has announced that the mandatory suspension of all Honor Flight trips will continue through May 31, 2020. In addition, the Board of the Honor Flight Network has instituted a mandatory suspension of all local Honor Flight group gatherings, including in-person fundraisers. This suspension will begin immediately and is in place through May 31, 2020.

Per the previous announcement by the Kansas Honor Flight Board of Directors that postponed our scheduled April flights, our flight coordinators have contacted those attendees scheduled to travel in April to make arrangements to travel at a later date. With this new suspension of flights, we will be contacting those scheduled to travel in May to also discuss future flight plans. Please understand this may take some time.

There is little certainty regarding how long these interruptions to our daily lives might last. Citizens of all ages probably need to study the resilience of the Greatest Generation when faced with the challenges of WWII. They simply did what was necessary to win that war. When the current global crisis ends…and it will end…we need to know that we responded appropriately and have a new perspective on ourselves and our abilities.

March 13, 2020 – April Flights Postponed

As a precautionary measure due to the COVID-19 virus, Kansas Honor Flight and the Honor Flight Network has decided to postpone all Honor Flights scheduled for April, 2020. The Board of Kansas Honor Flight has been monitoring guidance from health authorities. Several individuals both Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Virginia have tested positive for COVID-19. We are particularly concerned about the susceptibility of our elderly veterans to infectious diseases. Many veterans who make the Honor Flight trips have serious, chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, COPD or lung disease that leave them even more vulnerable to COVID-19. This postponement applies to all Honor Flight hubs across the United States.

The Kansas Honor Flights affected by this postponement include KHF #80 that was set for April 15-17 and Flt #81 that was set for April 29 – May 1st. Attendees that were scheduled to travel on these two flights will be contacted in the next several days to reschedule travel for this coming September. Please be patient as we work to contact all of the individuals scheduled to travel on these two flights. Your patience and understanding will be deeply appreciated.

As of this date, the two KHF flights for May and the three flights scheduled for June are still on our active list. For the veterans and guardians already scheduled for these months, the leadership of Kansas Honor Flight will reassess the suspension of trips in the coming days and weeks with information from health authorities and the Honor Flight Network. Any changes beyond April will be announced as soon as practicable.

Please contact us at 620-546-3509 if you have any questions.
